Why Japanese?
Being part Japanese I have always wanted to learn the Japanese language and more about the culture, but growing up in Singapore meant that I had to learn Chinese as schools didn't offer Japanese classes. Now that I finally have the chance to learn Japanese in Columbia I decided to clear my language requirement in Japanese rather than Chinese.
So far the class has been really enjoyable with us learning basic conversation and how to read and write in Hiragana. Learning Hiragana was the most challenging thing for me during the first few weeks of class but after some time I'm now comfortable reading and writing it. I'm excited to learn more about the language and become more proficient using it.

Hey Mekal! Glad that you are now comfortable reading and writing in Hiragana, which is still a challenge to me lol. Amazing that you chose an adventure of learning a totally new language over Chinese which you could easily fulfill your language requirement. Hope you learn the most out of this class!
ReplyDeleteHi Mekal! I totally relate to your struggle with Hiragana. I still cannot fully process a sentence unless I read it out... Hopefully as classes proceed we will get better at it.
ReplyDeleteI am super glad that you get to finally learn Japanese and connect with the culture. I wonder if you already know a lot of conversational Japanese before taking this class. But it's definitely worthy to build your knowledge from the ground!
Hello, Mekal! I can kind of relate to wanting to get closer to your heritage, honestly. Also, hiragana is kinda funky, since it's not really like anything in either English or Chinese. Although, you've probably already got a veritable utility belt of kanji down--that should be pretty nice to have. But regardless of all that, it's good that you're finding everything enjoyable. Looking forward to practicing more in class with you!
ReplyDeleteHey Mekal! I've really enjoyed our class too. Hopefully Katakana will be a little bit easier to learn than Hiragana!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think it's cool that you also took Chinese but decided to fill your language requirement with Japanese. Do you feel like having learned Chinese has helped you to understand Japanese? (But then again, they are very different...)
Anyway, it's been fun getting to know you in class and relating over being waitlisted and not having the textbook :D
Good choice, Mekal. Taking requirements for a language you already know is a waste of money. ><;
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear you're enjoying the class. It's not easy, but it's a gateway into some of the coolest culture, art, and history out there. Good luck!
