Being part Japanese I have always wanted to learn the Japanese language and more about the culture, but growing up in Singapore meant that I had to learn Chinese as schools didn't offer Japanese classes. Now that I finally have the chance to learn Japanese in Columbia I decided to clear my language requirement in Japanese rather than Chinese. So far the class has been really enjoyable with us learning basic conversation and how to read and write in Hiragana. Learning Hiragana was the most challenging thing for me during the first few weeks of class but after some time I'm now comfortable reading and writing it. I'm excited to learn more about the language and become more proficient using it. -- Mekal Helou
